AWARD WINNING JOURNALISM
I was objectively pleased because I believe the Lamp newspaper is consistently well put together and does a great job covering the military community of the Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth.
The Lamp newspaper works out of the Garrison Command Public Affairs Office on post, is part of the Leavenworth Times and our parent company is Gatehouse Media.
NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT
I have only been writing journalistically since my first Lamp article was published September 22, 2016. I was not expecting any type of recognition.
I am still learning the subtleties of AP Style and the specific practices within our own Lamp style guide.
I continually learn from our editor, photographer and production assistant in all aspects of the work I do as the staff writer.
It’s a very good team and the work environment on post is a healthy place to be everyday.
PRACTICE + GROWTH = IMPROVEMENT
Thoughts. I have always enjoyed writing. You can look at each website at our online portal BurnettMusic.COM and see that.
However, learning to write like a journalist has been rewarding on several levels too.
Most who know me, know that I am a person who believes in lifelong learning.
My fellow “Lampies” are master journalists.
I am learning from some of the best anywhere in the business.
And, I study some aspect of journalism and writing early most every morning before going to my day job with the newspaper.
KANSAS PRESS ASSOCIATION
Kansas Press Association sponsors its annual Awards of Excellence competition to recognize outstanding work by Kansas newspapers. The 64 contest categories focus on writing, photography, design, special sections and newspaper web sites. The advertising portion of the contest includes competition in ad concepts, design and revenue ideas. The awards will be presented to the newspapers during the AOE Awards Luncheon being held during the KPA Convention on April 8, 2017.
I post links to online versions, and downloadable PDF versions, of all of the articles I have written and are published in the Lamp on the Journalist page at BurnettPublishing.com.
All of the Lamp assignments have been very interesting and actually enjoyable to cover.
I anticipate this to be the case going forward as well.
